On September 27th of 2010, I ventured into the heart of Chicago.
A city whose awe-inspiring presence, architecture and essence, grows even more majestic when the sun begins to slowly crest over the vastness of Lake Michigan.
It was 3am and unreasonably cold.
My objective was to document life.
In its raw, unfettered form.
The way we have grown to accept rote patterns and habitual conformity.
The way we stagger through this world without the slightest hint of passion or purpose.
The way we offer cold, shallow greetings, in place of heartfelt and genuine connection.
They way we have decided to ‘Exist’… As apposed to embrace the beauty of ‘Living’.
That was my objective.
But what happened was not at all expected…

… What came clear is that this was not going to develop into just and average documentation of life as we know it.
As Chicago awoke and the bustle began, what we ended up capturing was epic.
The harshness of our pretend facades and the 2-face existence we endure. Calm and happy outwardly; empty and lacking true fulfillment within.
The coldness at which we march in straight lines, as if held in place; unable to deviate; too afraid to step outside the boundaries of conformity.
This was not a day of indictment for me.
I did not judge or cynically mock at those who appeared within the lens – Instead, I looked in the mirror…
… And saw the same bleak vacancy I had been witnessing all day.
We have been conditioned to think, act and feel certain ways.
To occupy our time and thoughts with the accumulation of ‘stuff’; to ‘fit in’ at all costs.
And in doing so, lose any shred of individuality and romance that, at one time, was our birthright to claim.
No, this isn’t a Hippie-esc or artsy portrayal of life through the starry-eyes of a Nomad or Gypsy.
I have walked the corporate stairway as a CEO.
Made the millions of dollars and traveled the world as a highly acclaimed consultant.
Surrounded myself with the ‘stuff’ and become obsessed with the collection of more.
But that day, in September of 2010, by simply observing mankind, I became paralyzed by a single fear…
